TATTOO AFTERCARE
Proper aftercare is crucial to ensure your tattoo heals correctly and maintains its vibrant appearance. Follow these detailed steps to care for your new tattoo:
Initial Bandaging
After completing your tattoo, your artist will apply a protective bandage. This covering shields the tattoo from contaminants, prevents irritation from external elements, and protects it during sleep. Keeping the bandage on as directed aids in a faster, more efficient healing process, resulting in a darker and sharper final appearance.
Step 1: Cleaning with Antibacterial Soap
Once you remove the bandage, gently cleanse the tattooed area:
-
Wash your hands thoroughly with antibacterial soap before touching the tattoo.
-
Use a mild, fragrance-free antibacterial soap and lukewarm water to clean the tattoo. Avoid direct application of soap; instead, create a lather in your hands and gently wash the area.
-
Rinse thoroughly and pat dry with a clean paper towel or allow it to air dry. Do not rub or use a cloth towel, as this can irritate the skin.
Step 2: Applying Aftercare Cream
After cleaning and drying the tattoo:
-
Apply a thin layer of a recommended aftercare ointment or fragrance-free moisturizer. Use just enough to lightly cover the tattoo; over-application can suffocate the skin and delay healing.
-
If the tattoo feels dry or tight, reapply as needed, ensuring each application is light.
Step 3: Re-Bandaging
After moisturizing:
-
Cover the tattoo with a clean, breathable bandage. Ensure the entire tattooed area is covered, and avoid placing adhesive directly on the tattooed skin.
-
This step protects the tattoo from external irritants and prevents it from sticking to clothing or bedding.
Ongoing Care Routine
For the first 5 days:
-
Repeat the cleaning, moisturizing, and re-bandaging process twice daily, preferably morning and night.
After 5 days:
-
Continue cleaning and moisturizing 2-3 times daily. At this stage, re-bandaging may no longer be necessary, but follow your tattoo artist's specific recommendations.
Additional Tips
-
Moisturizing and Hair Management: Keeping the tattooed area moisturized and free from hair can enhance the appearance and longevity of the tattoo.
-
Sun Protection: Once the tattoo has healed, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to the tattooed area when exposed to the sun. This practice helps prevent fading and preserves the tattoo's vibrancy.
-
Physical Activity: Avoid strenuous exercise for 5-7 days post-tattooing to prevent stress on the skin and reduce the risk of infection from sweat and environmental exposure.
-
Pet Precautions: Keep the healing tattoo away from pet hair and dander to minimize the risk of infection.
-
Water Exposure: Avoid submerging the tattoo in pools, oceans, or baths for at least 2 weeks. Excess moisture can impede healing and increase the risk of infection.
-
Monitoring Healing: It's normal for tattoos to scab or peel during healing. Do not pick at scabs or scratch the tattoo, as this can cause scarring or color loss.
